This is as true in health care as it is in any other service industry.

The NHS is an enormous healthcare provider in the UK. Any organisation this size will of course require managers to lead and run it. This is why managers and leaders play a major part within the NHS structure. There are of course various reasons to gain leadership skills in the healthcare sector. These skills will come in handy even for those not at management level. It also includes controlling the finance and equipment and other services within the building. All these aspects need to be managed in order to provide an efficient healthcare service.

The NHS provides a range of levels of management - for example, managing and running a GP's surgery or controlling a hospital with a provided budget which can be up to millions of pounds.

It is inevitable that the management of such an organisation introduces a great deal of social and economic issues.
